Achieve Your Dreams with TOEFL:
Your Path to Global Opportunities

One of the most popular English proficiency tests accepted at American and Canadian universities as well as several educational institutions overseas is the TOEFL.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL as it is officially known, is administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS) and evaluates each of the four academic English proficiency areas: speaking, writing, listening, and reading in a university context.

Depending on their convenience, candidates who meet the requirements to take the TOEFL exam can choose to take the Internet-Based Test (iBT) or the Home Edition.

TOEFL Exam Overview

For students who intend to study in English-speaking nations, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is an assessment of English proficiency.

Students who intend to pursue higher education overseas are the ones who take the ETS TOEFL exam. In addition to making students eligible for multiple scholarships, taking the TOEFL exam can assist candidates and students seeking work overseas with the visa application process.

The computer-delivered TOEFL iBT (internet-based test) is a more widely accessible version of the exam.

What are the Types of the TOEFL Exam?

In addition to TOEFL assessments like TOEFL Junior and IPT, the TOEFL test usually comes in the following formats:

TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test)

A candidate’s reading, speaking, listening, and writing skills in all four areas of English proficiency are assessed by the online TOEFL iBT. The TOEFL Internet-based Test format has gradually replaced the computer-based test (CBT) and paper-based test (PBT) formats since its launch in late 2005, though paper-based testing is still used in some regions.

TOEFL Home Edition

The TOEFL iBT and the TOEFL iBT Home Edition are nearly identical. However, the Home Edition is conducted at home with a human proctor using screen sharing and a web camera usually installed on laptops.

What is the Syllabus for TOEFL 2024?

Out of the four sections, the reading and listening sections have multiple-choice questions. The range of marks for the combined TOEFL score, which considers both reading and hearing, is 58–79.

Students must respond in both long—and short-form to the descriptive questions on the writing test. The TOEFL score ranges from 0 to 120, with a separate score assigned to each section. A score of more than 100 is regarded as excellent.

TOEFL Exam Reading Syllabus

In the Reading section of the TOEFL Exam, applicants are given two passages that are around 700 words each.

Ten questions are included after each passage, for a total of 20 questions for this section. It is wise to spend about 35 minutes on each section for maximum scores.

TOEFL Exam Listening Syllabus

The TOEFL exam’s Listening section introduces the candidates to three lectures, some of which are followed by class discussions.

Each lecture lasts 3 to 5 minutes and has 6 questions.

There are also two conversations with 5 questions each, lasting roughly 3 minutes each.

TOEFL Exam Speaking Syllabus

1 Independent Task (15–30 seconds for preparation; 45–60 seconds for response)

3 Integrated Tasks – Read/Listen/Speak (15–30 seconds for preparation; 45–60 seconds for answer)

TOEFL Exam Writing Syllabus

The TOEFL exam syllabus comprises 2 essays in the writing section, each covering a different subject. When answering questions, make sure your responses are well-organized, with clear explanations that relate directly to the topic.

TOEFL Results & Scores

Your performance on the TOEFL exam is evaluated in four sections, and your score ranges from 0 to 30. Based on the individual scores, you also receive an overall score ranging from 0 to 120.

The TOEFL has a very straightforward scoring system: you receive one point for each correct response.

Incorrect answers do not result in a failing grade.

The TOEFL score is good for two years after the result date.

Your test results are available to four universities at no cost thanks to ETS. There is an additional fee of INR 1,950 per university if you would like to submit your results to more than four.

How to Prepare for the TOEFL Test?

You can approach the preparation for the TOEFL in two ways: by self-study or by enrolling in coaching sessions.

Self-study using TOEFL books and resources might be a preferable choice if cost is the main factor. Similarly, joining a TOEFL coaching at AECC is a better choice if you require expert advice to guarantee an advantage when preparing for the exam.

Regularly read academically written materials, such as university textbooks, that span a range of subjects (such as the social sciences, sciences, arts, business, etc.). Academic texts come in a multitude of formats and can be found in magazines, journals, and online.

Instead of reading every word in the passage, practice skimming it quickly to get a sense of the main idea.

After skimming the text, read it again attentively, making note of the key details and the passage’s main idea.

Examine each of the four answer choices carefully.

To identify the passage’s major and minor points, create an outline of it.

Using the outlines and charts, summarise the passage either orally or in writing.

Rephrase specific sentences within a passage. Next, summarise whole paragraphs.
